Today, June 24th, This Day in Twilight Zone History and The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia remember makeup artist legend Bud Westmore, who passed away on this day in 1973 at 55.
Westmore was the first makeup artist to work on The Twilight Zone series, assigned to the official pilot episode "Where is Everybody?" Given his enormous genre credits through the years, it's ironic that he was assigned to an episode in which his contribution was minimal – maybe he added a little sweat to Earl Holliman's brow, but this wasn't a creature episode. And that's where Westmore was a prince among artists.
It's hard to believe that even though he passed so young, he compiled a whopping 554 credits, most of them with Universal Pictures, which hosted the pilot episode before producer Buck Houghton moved the TZ world to MGM.
Some of Westmore's credits include Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, This Island Earth, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Spartacus, The Munsters and Rod Serling's Night Gallery.
So even though Bud Westemore's TZ tenure was brief, let’s hoist a colorful brew to a legend in the makeup trailer who made Earl Holliman shine and got the series off to a terrific start.
