Jurassic Park Science

By Phil Plait

The Jurassic Park movie franchise is based on the irresistible idea that some part of dinosaurs survived: If an insect made a meal of dino blood, and was then trapped in amber, the genetic blueprint of the dinosaur could be partially recovered.

Right? Wrong. And even even if we suspend our disbelief and allow dinosaurs to run amok, what about the reason the Jurassic Park collapses? Ian Malcolm, the movie’s rock-star scientist, says that chaos theory will ensure things fall apart. Wrong again.

In the video above, Bad Astronomer Phil Plait digs into Steven Spielberg's very entertaining but very wrong movie, just in time for the likely even wronger Jurassic World, due out this weekend.
