Zack Snyder kicked off the DC Extended Universe, which currently includes Justice League members Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, the Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman, with 2013’s Man of Steel. Although the King of Atlantis officially made his debut in a cameo appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Aquaman star Jason Momoa just confirmed a fan theory that links his character to Man of Steel.

At one point in Snyder's polarizing Superman film, Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent has to save workers from a burning oil rig in the middle of the ocean. He’s seen holding the thing up when the rig collapses and Supes plunges into the ocean below, unconscious. As we see him sink into the water he’s surrounded by whales, and fans have long since believed the whales were sent by Aquaman to save him. Which Momoa confirmed in a new video interview with the good folks of DC All Access.

“In Man of Steel when Henry’s on the oil rig, he’s holding that up and then all of a sudden you see him up on the ocean, kind of floats up on the ocean," Momoa explained. “[Zack]’s like, I had Aquaman save him so that they’d get to cross paths at one point, so when Bruce goes, ‘You ever heard of Superman?’ I have and we have crossed paths.”

Check it out (it starts around the 4:50 mark):

Even though Justice League will feature the first “official” interaction between Aquaman and Superman, it’s kind of cool to learn the two superheroes sort of met off-camera in Man of Steel. Even if Supes was unconscious at the time. What do you think?

Justice League opens Nov. 17.
