We haven’t heard about the planned Mega-City One TV series — set in the Judge Dredd universe — in a while. But according to one former judge, jury, and executioner, it’s still in the works and could still feature the killer super-cop. Karl Urban, who played Dredd in the movie of the same name, has been in light talks with the Mega-City One team for a year, so if anyone knows what’s going on in the development of the series, it’s him.
According to Trek Movie, Urban spoke on the series and his possible involvement at last weekend’s Trekonderoga. While still remaining unattached to the project, Urban reiterated his interest in participating and explained that he “did have a preliminary round of conversations with them.”
But more interestingly, Urban broke out the show’s basic synopsis with some tantalizing details. The show was planned to be “set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis.” An ensemble of Judges were going to tackle the crazy sci-fi criminals in this world — but Urban says there’re a few more factors in play.
“Their idea for Mega-City One is was basically to build the show around more rookie judges and young, new judges,” said the actor, “and Dredd would come in and out -- and I said that I’ll do it, but it has to be done in a meaningful way.” But there has to be some meat to his story for him to hop on board. “I can’t just come on and grunt and pull faces, there has to be a story there for him. There has to be a kind of little arc and a story we are trying to tell. So, we will see what they do.”
There’s been no news from the show’s developers (aside from some concept art), but the more fleshed-out story sounds like it at least hasn’t crashed and burned behind the scenes. Do you want more Dredd?
