The Martian, autumn's must-see movie about an astronaut who is accidentally stranded on Mars, takes place in the near future. The United States portrayed in the movie is recognizable and familiar — even down to geeky references, like Lord of the Rings. And if you’re a LOTR fan (and who isn’t?), you’ll love this little easter egg.
I’m deliberately keeping this part vague, but in one scene, several people sit in a room and discuss a secret project. The project’s name? Elrond, from the Council of Elrond, a secret meeting in LOTR held to determine the fate of the One Ring.
But amusingly, in The Martian, a man named Mitch Henderson attends the meeting, and Henderson is played by actor Sean Bean ... who also starred in LOTR as Boromir.
This means that Bean has attended not one, but two Councils of Elrond.
But does Bean, who is famous for dying on camera, die in The Martian? That’s for you to find out -- and you should, because it was excellent. The Martian will be released on Oct. 2, 2015.
