Fans have been trying to guess who'll get to play Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first female-led superhero movie for a while now.
With no news forthcoming (this still being early days and all that), many have undertaken the mission to come up with fan casting lists of actresses they’d like to see as Carol (heck, we even came up with our own list of actresses not named Katee Sackhoff here at Blastr), and it seems that every other week this or that actress/celebrity is also lobbying hard for the role.
But with the movie still three years off (it's slated to come out in 2018), how soon will we actually know the name of the lucky gal who’ll play one of the MCU’s most powerful characters?
While at an LA event that celebrated the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron on DVD and Blu-ray, Marvel producers Kevin Feige and Jeremy Latcham said (via MTV News) that all those casting rumors we’ve been hearing about so far? All greatly exaggerated, because they’re really “not that close” to casting Carol Danvers yet.
“There won’t be any announcements about that this year,” Feige said. “I think right now we’re scripting the film, figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be, and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other Phase 3 films. And it would be next year that we start to really think about casting.”
So, we have at the very least a whole year to wait before we hear anything at all, then? Bummer.
“We have really amazing writers on the movie,” Latcham added. “Meg [LeFauve] and Nicole [Perlman] are great, and I think getting the character right first is going to lead the charge. We want to make sure we know who it is before we can start figuring out who should play it.”
And what about those lists of actresses geekdom has been coming up with for the coveted role of Captain Marvel? Do the powers-that-be at Marvel Studios know about the actresses fans think could be Mrs. Right for the role? Yep. You can bet a certain genius billionaire playboy philanthropist's insane amount of cold hard cash that they most certainly do.
“For me, we always have a clear sense of who we want to cast and who we’re interested in,” Latcham said. “We have amazing casting directors — Sarah Finn, who’s been with us since ’Iron Man’ — but at the same time, when a fan list comes out…”
“We look at it!” Feige admitted.
“We read it, we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like,” Latcham added. “Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right. It’s always fun to kinda go through it and see what people are up to.”
So whip out those lists again, guys. Maybe your favorite actress will end up getting the role thanks to your input. Who would you like to see flying around the MCU as Captain Marvel?
