One of the best space pirates of them all is finally getting the film he deserves.
Captain Harlock has technically existed since 1953, but it wasn't until the late '70s that he became an icon in Japan. It wasn't long after that before he made his way a lot further.
For a lot of us, Space Pirate Captain Harlock was our first experience with anime. Harlock is a fantastic anti-hero -- he's not very nice, doesn't always think much of humanity, and he's got more than a bit of a death wish, but he'll still take on all comers to protect the right of the people on Earth to live without fear of subjugation.
In 2010, we heard Harlock and his ship, the Arcadia, would fly again, this time in CG. And that gave us some pause, because prefer the hand-drawn stuff. But this latest trailer (pop soundtrack aside) has us pretty stoked.
Even if that was your first experience with Harlock, you've got to admit the movie looks impressive. If you've gt an affinity for Star Wars or you really dug Pacific Rim, checking this out seems like a no-brainer.
The $30 million flick is hitting Japanese theaters September 7th, but don't fret -- work on a dub is already in progress. And, barring that, there's always the inevitable fun-sub.
