This fall, after two seasons (and counting) of Riverdale on The CW, Netflix will give us a look at the more magical side of Archie Comics with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and now we finally have our first official look at the series and its world.
Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the chief creative officer at Archie, who also developed Riverdale for television and co-created the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics series, Chilling Adventures follows Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), a half-human, half-witch teenager with one foot in each world. Sabrina tries to live a relatively normal life as a high school student, but she's also beginning her "dark education as a sorceress" as we meet her in the series, and that will eventually bring her into conflict with "the forces of darkness that threaten our world," according to Netflix's official description.
The first two official images from the show, released by Netflix, paint a very clear picture of this dual identity. On the one hand, we have Sabrina, a seemingly normal girl in a stylish red coat, walking in the woods, but even in this image, the stick and the bell give a hint that something odd might be about to happen.
On the other, there's the image of Sabrina in the world of witches, including her aunts Hilda (Wonder Woman's Lucy Davis) and Zelda (The Lord of the Rings' Miranda Otto), which gives us a glimpse at her "dark baptism" as she's attended to by Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle). Both are incredibly atmospheric, if brief, looks at the show, and we can't wait to see more, particularly when the real magic starts to arrive. Netflix has promised the show will be "tonally in the vein" of horror classics like Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist, so it'll be interesting to see how the footage eventually bears that out.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also stars Jaz Sinclair (Paper Towns) as Sabrina's best friend Rosalind Walker and Doctor Who's Michelle Gomez playing dual roles as Sabrina's teacher Mary Wardell and as the sinister Madam Satan. It arrives on Netflix October 26, just in time for Halloween.
