After watching the first trailer for the Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, you probably thought it couldn't get darker. But what if we told you Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka) is physically allergic to Salem? Now, that's dark.
What do you do if you find out a teenage witch is allergic to her very own black cat? Apparently, if you're Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, you consider the alternatives. “It did go through my mind: Could Salem be a dog?” he confessed to EW in a new interview revealing more dark details about Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which premieres on Netflix in October.
“The idea was to do a dark horror version of Sabrina, something that was more of a slow-burn horror, like The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby and all those great satanic horror movies from the 1960s and 1970s," said Aguirre-Sacasa.
It's already been revealed that Season 1 will feature mini-movie episodes, including one based on The Exorcist. But Sabrina will also face down the devil in the first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Makes you wonder what she could possibly face in Season 2, doesn't it?
But don't worry, it's not all terrifying. Miranda Otto, who plays Aunt Zelda, said there are lighter moments in the show as well.
“The show melds a whole lot of different tones because there’s a sweet, lighter tone of the high school and the romance between Sabrina and Harvey, and then you’ve got the darker tone of the Spellman house and everything that goes on in there,” explained Otto.
So while the reboot is much, much darker than the Sabrina you might remember, there will still be some light-hearted moments too. And yes, Salem will still be a cat.
Season 1 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina hits Netflix October 26.
