Netflix's upcoming revival of Sabrina the Teenage Witch has found its star: Kiernan Shipka, most notable for roles in Mad Men and Feud. Netflix ordered two seasons of the Riverdale spinoff in December, which is based on the Archie Comics graphic novel, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
The new series will look to reintroduce Sabrina Spellman in the same vein that Riverdale re-imagined Archie Andrews. Sabrina is described as "an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch." She is said in the press release to be "just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High." Described as intelligent, compassionate, and "brave to the point of recklessness," Sabrina will ultimately be "all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world."
Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is thrilled with the casting, saying: “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
Archie Comics CEO and executive producer Jon Goldwater added his support into the mix, saying, “I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage and boldness that has made the character a fan favorite.”
The tone of the show will be in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist, so this will certainly be a dark take on the Sabrina mythos. So we can think of no better person to play her than Sally Draper herself.
