Taron Egerton won't be in the next Kingsman film, but don't worry, super-fans, that's no cause for alarm, according to the franchise's creator.
Egerton — whose breakthrough role came in Kingsman: The Secret Service back in 2014 — made headlines this week when he announced in an interview that the upcoming third film in the franchise about a fictional British spy organization won't feature his character, Eggsy. Since Eggsy was the point-of-view character who introduced viewers to the world of Kingsman four years ago, and the hero who helped save the organization in last year's The Golden Circle, it was a bit of a shock to some fans who were eager to see what the character would do next.
It was also a bit confusing, since Egerton noted the news doesn't mean he's completely done with the franchise. He simply said the next film "doesn't involve" Eggsy, and while you may have missed exactly what that's supposed to mean, Kingsman comic co-creator Mark Millar is here to clear everything up.
Taking to his Twitter account Thursday, Millar explained Egerton's absence from the next film by reminding everyone that Kingsman 3 is actually not Kingsman 3. It's a prequel, and not a continuation of the first two films.
So Eggsy isn't in the next film quite simply because he won't have been born yet when it takes place. Instead, we'll get to go back to the early days of the organization with a secret headquarters in the back of a tailor's shop. That means we'll have to wait a bit longer to see Egerton back in the franchise, but Millar and Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn have always had big plans for the franchise beyond one story, and this is just that playing out.
The Kingsman prequel is set to release November 9, 2019.
