Tapping into a little of that same zeitgeist that propelled the manic VR rush of Ready Player One, Netflix is prepping the launch of new young adult sci-fi series Kiss Me First. And if this new trailer’s anything to go by, it looks like we’re in for a wild and trippy ride.
Based on the eponymous novel from Lottie Moggach, Kiss Me First follows a teenage girl named Leila, who’s coping with the loss of her mother by plunging her avatar headfirst into an overstimulated VR world called Azana. Like any good VR blast, Azana’s a fast and colorful place — one that serves up an engaging escape from Leila’s drab and familiar London surroundings.

For every new online friend Leila makes, or adventure she embarks on, there’s a dark and dangerous development to match it. With a sinister, faceless VR presence throwing the game from the inside, it’s up to her and her VR-savvy friend Tess (Simona Brown) to find and confront the real menace inside her escapist world — before it breaks through to the real one.
Starring Brown (The Night Manager) and Tallulah Haddon (Taboo), the CGI-heavy Kiss Me First already has enjoyed a well-received run in the U.K. ahead of its wider distribution. The show spans six episodes, and is slated to start lighting up TV pixels everywhere beginning June 29.
