SPOILER ALERT! Stop here if you have not yet watched the Game of Thrones season finale. What are you waiting for?
Last night's season finale of Game of Thrones was 80 minutes of awesomeness. There were no shocking reveals, but it was a taut, well-crafted episode. (Check out our recap here.)
The biggest reveal was the final, spelled-out confirmation that Jon Snow is not a bastard; he is the legal child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, which makes him the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. As Lyanna was passing the baby to her brother Ned on her death bed, she told him his name: Aegon Targaryen.
And of course, all of this info is confirmed while Jon and Daenerys give in to their passions and have sex. The characters don't know that they are aunt and nephew. How did the actors react?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) could only respond with "Ewwwwww!" She did tell the reporter that, even though Jon has a better claim to the throne, Dany won't want to share. “No. The throne’s big enough for one dragon bum, and that’s mine. That’s it!”
Kit Harington (Jon) was a little more pragmatic about Jon and Dany's relationship. “Usually you go into a movie and meet [your costar] for the first time and you develop that chemistry over that time,” Harington says. “But if you’ve known somebody for seven years and shared this incredible journey in your own lives together … we’re both kind of freaking out about it. I would be like, ‘What’s the sexual tension in this scene?’ and she’s like, ‘Stop talking about sexual tension!’ It’s a unique experience to be in as an actor and you know the world is watching.”
“Yeah, [I would say], ‘Would you just stop? Just give me some sexy eyes, don’t keep talking about sexual chemistry all the time,'” Clarke said of the tension. “I love that when we get to the saucy stuff it’s a beautiful acceptance of a wordless … yep.”
Looking ahead to the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, Harington says that when Dany and Jon find out about their blood relationship, he thinks it will be a "really cool scene," but he can't predict if it will be good or bad. “It could be them walking off into the sunset. It could be them killing each other.”
While fans are foaming at the mouth over the fact that Dany and Jon finally slept together, another relationship in the season finale was the one that stuck out to Harington: Jon and Theon. In an interview with Deadline, Harington said, "I think that the really poignant bit for me, my favorite moment really in the episode, just on a personal level, was I was getting to work with Alfie Allen again and do the scene with Theon where they meet in the Dragonstone throne room. I love that scene, because I love what Alfie does with his character. I’ve loved his journey this season. I think that’s just really interesting to look at how those characters and the journeys they’ve been on since they interacted in that first season. Now here they are as men, and what’s changed, and what they’ve been through, and I think was a really interesting thing to play with me for and Alfie."
Obviously, Harington can't give away any details on Season 8 (even if he wanted to; he still hasn't read any of the final scripts), but he predicts there will be some "big, in-your-face movie stuff" and that the final season will be a "bloodbath." "And the thing is, with so few characters left, [the viewers] should ... get ready for next year's Thrones returning to form and killing its main characters quickly. They’re going to go, and they’re going to go fast, and I think that the payoff of our characters not being in great peril this year will be that, next year, it’s going to be a bloodbath."
What did you think about the season finale of Game of Thrones? Are you glad Jon and Dany finally hooked up? Or is it too incestuous for you?
