This week we got more details on Marvel Studios' next film Captain Marvel, including photos of Captain Marvel herself. We also finally met her best buddy Maria Rambeau (played by Lashana Lynch, who replaced actress DeWanda Wise in the role).
Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige says more female superheroes are headed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, the first female-led MCU film Captain Marvel hits theaters March 2019, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, the Air Force pilot who takes on the Captain Marvel mantle. But that isn't the only big step for the franchise. Lashana Lynch, who plays Captain Marvel's BFF Maria Rambeau, says the female friendships in the film are also unique to the genre.
“There’s a certain level of female sisterhood that I haven’t seen in a superhero film before, that we have in abundance,” Lynch told EW.
For Marvel comics fans, the name "Rambeau" should sound familiar, because Monica Rambeau donned the Captain Marvel identity first. Maria is Monica's mother and was nervous about her daughter's superhero ways. But it seems like the film version will be a fellow pilot who is able to connect with Carol when both are thrown into difficult situations.
“She is thrown into many a situation in this movie that she’s never been a part of, never seen, never experienced — and she just learns it, immediately," explained Lynch. "She’s very resilient and very strong.”
But don't worry, Monica is still a part of the story. In Captain Marvel, Maria is a single mother to her daughter, who is a child in the 1990s, when the film takes place. Will we get some sweet Carol/Maria/Monica scenes as part of the sisterhood? We can only hope.
Captain Marvel blasts into theaters March 8, 2019.
