If you’ve seen the theatrical trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, then you already know Jeff Goldblum is returning after an extended franchise absence to reprise his role as chaos theoretician Ian Malcolm. So wouldn’t it be cool if he were joined by Ellie Sattler, the cautious paleobotanist played by Laura Dern in the original Jurassic Park?
Dern appears to think so. She’s not exactly giving anything away, but Dern coyly teased the possibility, or at least her wish, that Sattler — who teamed up with paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill) to assess what science had wrought in Steven Spielberg's landmark 1993 film — just might get a cameo in Fallen Kingdom.
Talking to Entertainment Tonight at the recent premiere of Downsizing, in which she also has a cameo, Dern gave the merest hint that her Jurassic Park screen time shouldn't be over just yet.
“[It] could be fun," she told ET. "I mean, I love Ellie Sattler… She’s a tough feminist, come on! We need her back.”
Maybe that’s just advocacy for a role Dern hopes to revisit… or maybe she’s inviting fans to read between the lines. Her most recent appearance in the franchise came in Jurassic Park III in 2001.
Either way, Dern’s definitely having a moment. Her turn as the stoic and selfless Vice Admiral Holdo, second in command on General Organa's Raddus Rebel starcruiser, exposed her to a new generation of fans on the film world’s biggest stage in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She also just came off a stint on HBO’s Big Little Lies series, in which she plays tough mom Renata Klein, and which won her an Emmy Award.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which returns Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard to Isla Nublar face of against rampaging dinos, hits theaters on June 22, 2018.
