A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen reboot has been in development for a few months now, and the first details have finally leaked out. The biggest surprise? It’s apparently more about the ladies than the gentlemen.

After the disastrous attempt at adapting Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s acclaimed comic about Victorian-era heroes back in 2003, 20th Century Fox is taking another shot. Producer John Davis chatted about the project during the TCA press tour, and said that much as Mad Max: Fury Road featured a strong female lead in Furiosa (Charlize Theron), they want to bring that same attitude to League.

Here’s the choice excerpt via Collider:

“Just by going back to the roots and making it authentic to what the fan base was really excited about. It’s female-centric, which I think is interesting. I love female characters, point-of-view characters in action movies. I thought Mad Max was great. I think you can always find a fresh way of doing something and going back to the basics. What is that people love? What is it that made them love the property in the first place?”

We’re always glad to see a studio interested in putting strong female characters into would-be blockbusters, and if they follow the model from Fury Road, it could definitely work. Moore’s 1999 comic is a rich tapestry to draw from. Here’s hoping second time’s the charm.
