With the recent news that The CW had renewed Legends of Tomorrow alongside fellow Arrowverse series The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, and Black Lightning, now comes word via Entertainment Weekly that Jes Macallan (aka Ava Sharpe) has been upped to a series regular for Season 4 of Legends.
Macallan joined the superhero team-up series from the onset of Season 3 and first appeared as Time Bureau agent Ava Sharpe in the season premiere episode, titled “Aruba-Con.” Recently, the character has been promoted to director of the time-travel organization created by Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) to protect the timeline from the anachronisms caused by the Legends.
Ava also became Sara Lance’s (Caity Lotz) love interest and was recently revealed to be a clone from the future. Not only is Ava a clone, but she’s also the 12th one Rip has recruited for the Time Bureau. Which begs the question: What happened to the previous 11 clones, exactly?
Executive producer Phil Klemmer told EW that they always planned to give Sara someone the Captain of the Waverider would fall in love with this year. The challenge was to find the right character and the right actress for the part. Which they did both in Ava and in Macallan following her chemistry read with Lotz.
“Her character arc was a bit of a slow burn this season, and yet each episode revealed a new facet of her character,” said Klemmer in a statement. “She’s been alternately funny, poignant, engaging, endearing, and kick-ass this season — and yet I know for a fact that we haven’t hit all of Jes’ hidden gears as an actor. We are lucky to have a whole new season in which to find them. It’s not every actor who can find the emotional heart of a storyline that features John Constantine, a chicken, and a severed human foot. Thank God we found Jes Macallan.”
With Sara having told Ava she loved her and Ava walking away in the latest episode of Legends of Tomorrow, “Guest Starring John Noble,” things may have to wait until Season 4 to be resolved between the two lovebirds. What with the Legends taking on Mallus in next week's Season 3 finale, “The Good, the Bad and the Cuddly,” and all that.
Macallan will be joining fan favorite Matt Ryan, who has also come on board as series regular for the show’s fourth season in the role of demonologist and occult detective John Constantine. Constantine will be joining the crew of the Waverider full-time following his return appearance on Monday.
