It's been six years since Jonah Hex took a dive on the big screen, but now the legendary character is coming back to live action -- on TV.
According to Variety (via Collider), veteran actor Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!, Quarantine) has signed on to play Hex in the new CW series Legends of Tomorrow. Schaech will be a guest star on the 11th episode of the show's premiere season, joining regulars Caity Lotz (White Canary), Brandon Routh (The Atom), Wentworth Miller (Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Heatwave), Victor Garber and Franz Drameh (Firestorm), Falk Hentschel (Hawkman) and Ciara Renee (Hawkgirl) in a story set in the Old West.
Executive producer Marc Guggenheim said that a visit to the Old West town of Salvation was in the cards ever since they decided to include time travel on the show, adding, "If you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply MUST include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well known, beloved DC character to television.”
Hex premiered in the pages of DC Comics in 1972 as a rough-hewn, highly cynical and horribly scarred bounty hunter and antihero who nevertheless had a strong moral code and devotion to protecting the innocent. He has appeared on and off in books published by DC and its Vertigo imprint ever since, but also appeared -- played by Josh Brolin -- in his own 2010 theatrical motion picture that is widely regarded as one of the most disastrous comics-based movies ever made.
Yet Hex has always remained a cult favorite among readers, so now is the chance for him to be redeemed in the live-action realm. if the character proves popular enough, he could return to Legends of Tomorrow as well. What do you think of Jonah Hex making his return, and Johnathon Schaech playing him?
Legends of Tomorrow premieres this Thursday (January 21) on The CW.
