With John Constantine (Matt Ryan) becoming a series regular for the fourth season of Legends of Tomorrow, fans can expect a boatload of magical mayhem to ensue when the crew of the Waverider returns to our TV screens later this year. Especially in the wake of our band of misfit superheroes defeating the demon Mallus and opening the door to some things possibly worse than him.
As part of its Upfront presentation earlier today, The CW released a very detailed synopsis for the show’s upcoming fourth season as well as some key art. The beauty of it is that it reveals what threats (they are called “Fugitives”) the team will face alongside the Time Bureau when the show returns on Monday nights in the fall. It also teases Constantine’s role, which will have to do with recapturing those magical creatures and expelling them from history once more. Here’s the official synopsis as per the network:
“After defeating the demon Mallus by cuddling him to death with a giant stuffed animal named Beebo, the Legends are ready to ease off the gas,” the synopsis reads. “Sara (Caity Lotz) and her team join Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) and the Time Bureau to help clean up the last few remaining anachronisms. The job seems straightforward enough until Constantine (Matt Ryan) arrives to inform them that, in solving one major problem, they have created another, much larger one. When the Legends let time crumble in order to release and defeat Mallus, the barrier between worlds softened. History is now infected with “Fugitives” – magical creatures from myths, fairytales, and legends. Having been expelled throughout time by people like Constantine, these Fugitives are now returning to our world in droves and making a real mess of things. As the Time Bureau is distrustful of and ill-equipped to deal with magic, the Legends must team up with everyone’s favorite demonologist to set history back on track.”
Looks like Legends of Tomorrow will be pulling a Once Upon A Time by adding creatures from myths, fairytales and legends. We can just about imagine the team taking on a Minotaur, for example, or facing off against the Wicked Witch of the West, if those are indeed the type of magical creatures they are looking to add this season. More likely, they could be characters plucked from the pages of DC's Hellblazer comics since Constantine was responsible for expelling some of them. The synopsis continues as followed:
“Sara and Constantine are joined by compassionate inventor Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), hotheaded ex-con Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell), rebellious totem-bearer Zari (Tala Ashe), and heartbroken historian-turned-superhero Nate (Nick Zano) as they set out to save the world – and their legacy. It’s the familiar fun of the Legends time-travelling across historical events and encountering famous figures with an added shot of magical craziness!”
One thing we noticed is the apparent absence of Keiynan Lonsdale’s name on the cast list and team pic for Season 4, especially since he was added as a series regular last year. SYFY WIRE has reached out to The CW for comment on his status. Does that mean that Wally West’s time on the Waverider has already run short? Or will he slide into being a part-timer? That would be a shame because the presence of a speedster on the team has proven to be pretty cool (though likely expensive for the effects team).
Are you looking forward to Season 4 of Legends of Tomorrow?
