Legion is best described as a superhero show on a long, wild acid trip. Multiple planes of existence; bright colors; terrifying monsters; crazy superpowers; even song-and-dance numbers. What is real, what is imagined, and what takes place somewhere in between is almost impossible to discern.
Which is why this new Season 2 teaser for Legion is both maddening and expected. The teaser below includes no scenes from the upcoming season; rather, it features Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) talking to the viewer, assuring that everything in Season 1 was "in your head."
What is most puzzling is this line: "What's coming is very, very real. But let's save that for our next season." First, let's get this out of the way: a third season of Legion has not been ordered by FX, but it is nice to know the producers are planning for it. But this leaves a lot of ambiguity about what this season will be.
If Season 1 was "all in your head," and Season 3 will be "very, very real," where does that leave Season 2? Half and half? Set in some kind of dreamspace? Or is this just Lenny screwing with our minds?
Legion is set in the X-Men universe, and focuses on David (Dan Stevens), a young man whose mutant powers may or may not be due to mental illness (or is his mental illness due to his mutant powers?). Lenny is a parasite that lives within David, until the season finale, when she is seen passing from friend to friend until she seems to escape Summerland with a man who had been in a vegetative state for 30 years.
The whole show is utterly bonkers and defies description. It is also what makes it one of the most mind-bending shows of 2017. Legion returns for its second season Apr. 3 on FX. Maybe we'll get a better idea of what's going on then.
