In the wake of the casting of the Red (Dacre Montgomery) and Pink (Naomi Scott) Rangers, Lionsgate & Saban Entertainment have announced that they’ve found two more key team members.
RJ Cyler will play Blue Ranger "Billy Cranston" (that's according to rumors) in the upcoming Power Rangers big-screen reboot helmed by Dean Israelite. The young actor wowed audiences earlier this year with his amazing turn in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. As Comic Book Movie points out, his character will differ a bit from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' precursor David Yost, who is Caucasian. Here’s the rumored description of the Blue Ranger:
17 years old, slight & awkward. Billy is challenged in his abilities to communicate and interact socially. Whip-smart and sweet, but always odd. Sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not, Billy is a kid with no filter. Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge. Has never really had any friends and instantly gravitates towards Jason.
Newcomer Ludi Lin (dude's most notable credit is a part in one episode of Netflix’s Marco Polo and a movie titled Monster Hunt) has joined the team as "Zack Taylor," aka the Black Ranger. The character is said to be likely to harness the Mastodon Dinozord power. Lin has apparently beaten out Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Ross Butler (Chasing Life) and Brian "Sene" Marc (Luke Cage), who were reportedly up for the role.
It's Comic Book Movie's belief that the new Rangers won’t simply be updated takes on the beloved TV characters, but rather a possible reimagining with new protagonists. I guess we'll have to wait and see if that is the case. Here’s a rumored description of the character, who was African-American in the original series. :
Zack – 17 years old, always the life of the party. Filled with bravado and swagger, Zack’s tough and cool on the exterior. A charming guy who’s never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women. A great athlete that’s never wanted to play on any team but his own. Zack advertises everything about himself, except the truth, which is that he lives in a trailer park with his single mom, and because of it, feels deeply inferior to all his peers.
