When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters this weekend, it will feature the first big-screen appearance of Peter Porker, aka Spider-Ham, but there's a side to the character the movie won't show you.

Spider-Ham is voiced in Into the Spider-Verse by John Mulaney, an acclaimed stand-up comic and former Saturday Night Live writer who's not necessarily the first name you'd think of to cast in your superhero movie, but fits perfectly into the Spider-Verse as Peter Porker. Mulaney appeared on The Tonight Show Monday to promote the film, and explained that he was quite taken aback by the casting process, because at first he wasn't even sure what he was there for. When he finally did meet with the filmmakers, he was absolutely floored by the rest of the cast, and wasn't sure what he was getting into until co-director Rodney Rothman filled him in on his role.

“I said ‘I’m scared,’ because I’ve never not known what a movie is, and then I’m about to be in the movie," Mulaney said. "And they said ‘Well, you play a superhero who’s a pig, who makes non-stop outdated jokes.’ And I said ‘I got it.’”

When it came time to finally start recording his dialogue for the film, Mulaney was given the freedom to improvise a little bit, but he was still a little shaky about the whole project. That created a very profane version of Spider-Ham, which is evident in the alternate takes he brought to share with Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon in the video above.

“It is wonderfully scripted, but they did a thing that is very generous when they say to comedy people, they say ‘Have fun with it. And you know, add your own words,'" he said. "And so for the very first session...I did go my own way with it, and I threw in my own lines, and what happened was I was just cursing, wildly.”

So, on at least one alternate Earth somewhere in the Spider-Verse, there's a Peter Porker that's very, very R-rated.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is in theaters Friday.
