Marvel and Hulu have announced they've joined forces on a live-action Runaways superhero TV series based on the fan-favorite Marvel comics. The series hails from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, Marvel Television and ABC Signature.

Not only is this pretty big news in and of itself, but it’s also big news in that Hulu (like ABC, Netflix and Freeform with the upcoming Marvel's Cloak and Dagger) is also getting in on the Marvel game, opening up a lot of interesting possibilities. We at Blastr have been asking for a Runaway series or movie for years, so we're even more excited about this.

The comic book series was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona back in 2003 and featured a group of superpowered teenagers who discover that their parents are part of an evil crime organization called "The Pride."

Deadline reports that Marvel’s Runaways will “tell the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe – their parents.” Sounds interesting, right?

The live-action TV adaptation came about following a series of talks Schwartz and Savage had with Marvel TV execs over the past year and was developed under an overall deal Schwartz and Savage’s Fake Empire has with ABC Studios (with whom Marvel is currently making Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Executive producer and Marvel Head of TV Jeph Loeb said:

“We’ve known the Runaways‘ story would make great television, and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

Schwartz said, “I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” with Savage adding  “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu.”

Schwartz and Savage will serve as showrunners on Marvel’s Runaways, and they will executive-produce with Loeb and Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil) Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski will also produce.

Are you excited to see Marvel’s Runaways heading to Hulu?
