It's no surprise that a list of the biggest-earning actors in Hollywood would be full of genre stars, but which one came out on top?
Well, if you've been reading the news lately, it shouldn't come as a shock that the highest-paid actor of 2013 is none other than Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr. The Iron Man 3 and soon-to-be Avengers 2 star topped the annual Forbes list with an estimated payout of $75 million in the last year. That's thanks, at least in part, to some shrewd contract negotiations for box-office bonuses and backend deals that reportedly earned him somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million last year just for his work in The Avengers.
So number one on this list isn't really a surprise at all, but number two might be. Running a relatively close second to Downey on the list is G.I. Joe: Retaliation and White House Down star Channing Tatum, with $60 million. How did he get this high on the list? Two words: Magic Mike. The $7 million film, based in part on Tatum's own past as a stripper, was co-financed by Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh, which meant they each were poised to get a big chunk of whatever the film earned. Then the film went on to earn more than 20 times its budget at the box office.
Coming in third on the list is yet another genre superstar: Hugh Jackman, with $55 million. His big earnings were thanks in large part to the success of Les Miserables late last year (which also scored him an Oscar nomination), but we're betting Wolverine also had something to do with it. Other recent genre stars on the list include Dwayne Johnson at number five with $46 million and Tom Cruise at number eight with $35 million, though almost everyone on the list seems to have touched a hit genre film at one point or another.
