Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh, Joss Whedon—all huge names in their respective niches, but none of them (until recently) were really that successful in the realm of big-budget filmmaking. But then Marvel got hold of them. And now Marvel's looking to do it again—the studio is in exclusive talks with James Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy.

"James who?" you might be asking. "What's that about a gun?!" you might exclaim. Relax. We'll explain everything.

James Gunn got his start with one of the most infamous independent studios of all time—Troma. Yes, those guys who made the Toxic Avenger. Well, being under the wing of the great Lloyd Kaufman obviously had an effect, because James Gunn is best known for his fantastic horror piece Slither, which starred a certain Mr. Nathan "Capt. Malcolm Reynolds" Fillion. He also wrote that Scooby-Doo movie, too, where Scrappy-Doo is the villain. You remember that one, right? The one starring Sarah "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Gellar? That's right. The Whedon connection is already in full-blown effect.

If that's not enough to pique your interest, he also recently wrote and directed the dark-comedy-meets-superhero-flick Super, which was like Kick-Ass except even more brutal.

Add all that up and it's hardly a surprise that Marvel's courting him. The question is, will he be able to take the indie cred and turn the quirky space-age heroes into blockbuster summer gold?

What do you think?
