Though it didn't go over so well with many veteran fans of the franchise who know the Turtles best from the original comic books or the 1980s animated series, last year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did earn its share of admirers at the box office. There wasn't a lot of critical love there, sure, but the Michael Bay-produced new take on the Heroes in a Half Shell ended up grossing nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, so it's no surprise that a sequel was quickly greenlit.
One of the bright sides of the sequel is the promise of additional TMNT supporting characters joining the cast. Villains Bebop and Rocksteady have been mentioned as possible additions as the franchise goes on, and so has Casey Jones, the hockey-mask-wearing vigilante who's at various points in Turtle history been a friend, a foe, a love interest for April O'Neil and more. Now we know that Casey will be bringing his particular brand of criminal-beating to the sequel, and we also know who'll be playing him.
Variety reports that Arrow star Stephen Amell has joined Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 in the Casey Jones role. He joins returning co-stars Megan Fox as O'Neil and Will Arnett as cameraman Vern Fenwick for the film, which will be directed by David Green (Earth to Echo) and is being written by returning TMNT scribes Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec. Amell reportedly tested with "a half-dozen" other actors last weekend and won the role thanks to his chemistry with Fox.
There's no word yet on just how much Casey Jones we can expect to see in the film, but we know Amell's got the action chops to make it fun. As for whether he'll be wearing a hockey mask, well ...
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is schedule to be released on June 6, 2016.
