Looks like Edgar Wright wants one of these two guys to play Ant-Man

The hunt for an actor to play Ant-Man in the Marvel character's long-awaited screen debut has reportedly narrowed down to two actors.

Sources have told Variety that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are the two leading contenders to star in Ant-Man, which will be directed by Edgar Wright (The World's End) from a script he wrote with Joe Cornish (who directed the excellent British sci-fi indie Attack the Block).

The report adds that a third actor could enter the fray as well, but that is looking more and more remote as the focus narrows down to Gordon-Levitt and Rudd. The two actors are allegedly going to meet with Wright and Marvel bigwigs one more time before a decision is made.

What's interesting is that neither actor seems like typical superhero material. While Gordon-Levitt played John "Robin" Blake in The Dark Knight Rises (and was at one point rumored to possibly wear the cowl himself in a potential Justice League movie), he certainly comes across as more of a regular guy.

Rudd, meanwhile, is best known for wisecracking comedic roles in movies like Anchorman and I Love You, Man, with "action hero" not really showing up on his resume just yet.

Either man, however, would continue Marvel's streak of casting against expectations -- see Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, both of whom caught fans off-guard.

The other question is, which version of Ant-Man will either Rudd or Gordon-Levitt play? The first Ant-Man in the comics was scientist Henry Pym, one of the original Avengers, who was able to change his size through the creation of a chemical substance. But it's been speculated that Wright and Cornish's script would focus on Scott Lang, who stole Pym's chemical and suit but was eventually persuaded by the scientist to become the new Ant-Man (and ended up joining the Avengers himself).

Here's an idea: Perhaps one actor could play Pym and other could take the role of Lang? It's not clear if both characters actually appear in the script, so that possibility remains murky at best.

But here's what is crystal clear: Ant-Man is due for release on July 31, 2015, so a decision has to be made soon on who will play the part. If it's down to Rudd and Gordon-Levitt, which one would you like to see?
