Lord of the Rings fantasies play out live on Stephen Colbert's Late Show

Stephen Colbert flexes his nerd credentials with relative frequency on The Late Show, tackling everything from Star Wars to Thanos. But one piece of genre that Colbert would never treat with anything but the highest reverence is J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. When Liv Tyler, who played Arwen in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed adaptations, came on the program on Thursday night, she brought a gift that inspired a small moment of fan reenactment.

What’s a prop sword without using it to protect a ringbearer from some Ringwraiths? “Would you indulge in a fantasy of mine?” A network-TV-appropriate one, of course. Colbert asked — and oh yes, the indulgence happened.

Take a look:

No watery horses showed up, galloping downstream, after Tyler said, “If you want him, come and claim him,” but it certainly fulfilled all of Colbert’s Frodo fantasies. And can you believe she still speaks Elvish after all these years?

That might come in handy for The Lord of the Rings Amazon show, which hopes to reach fans by 2021.
