Don’t ever let it be said that Luc Besson isn’t a passionate filmmaker. With Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opening wide this weekend, Besson is already hard at work on the sequel — and the sequel’s sequel, to boot.
Besson told Nerdist he loves the world of Valerian so much that he’s already pretty much wrapped the script for Part 2, and he’s now writing away on Part 3. For titles, we're thinking City of a Million Planets, and City of a Billion Planets? Just sayin'. This is a story Besson has been passionate about for a long time, so it’s no surprise he wants to keep exploring this universe. But dang — that’s a whole lot of writing, especially for movies there’s no guarantee he’ll actually get to make. Since, you know, Valerian is expected to be one of the biggest box-office flops of the year this weekend. Gulp.
Here’s an excerpt from Besson’s comments:
“I finished the number 2 already and I’m writing the number 3. I don’t know if we will do it, because it’s not up to me. It’s up to the audience if they like it. But my friends all said, ‘Why are you writing the second one? You don’t even know if you’re going to do it.’ [And I said] ‘I don’t care. It’s fine. [laughs] I’m just happy to write it. I’m enjoying writing it. I don’t even wait. I’m just writing for myself. So I finished the [sequel] already, and I got bored a month ago, so I said, ‘Let’s write the third.’”
It seems Valerian may be positioning itself as another cult classic for sci-fi fans, because a whole lot of people may have to find it on home release if that dreadful, $18.5 million opening weekend estimate turns out to be true.
What do you think? Will we ever see a sequel to Valerian?
