In a summer cram-packed with mostly-conventional sequels and tentpole popcorn fare, Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a breath of insanely ambitious fresh air. So, how about a trip behind the scenes?
Besson hosts a brand new, extended featurette from the film, walking us through the story, the effects works, and the director’s own passion for the classic comic material. The more we see of this film, the more it feels like a spiritual successor to what Besson was doing all those years ago in The Fifth Element. Besson basically says as much, noting modern day special effects have changed the game in a way that finally made the story of Valerian adaptable for the big screen.
Along with all the behind the scenes shots, we also get to see some fresh footage, including a bevy of new aliens, ships and alien worlds. The jury’s still out on if this movie is any good, but there’s no doubt it’ll be stunning.
Valerian opens July 21 in the U.S.
