Leave it to George Lucas to clear up all the confusion, and confuse us some more, about Star Wars: Episode VII.
Now, Lucas has clarified (and somewhat muddled) the situation via an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek. Basically it’s a done deal for Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Fisher to return, but they’re still in the “final stages” of negotiation. Of course, after saying that, Lucas tries to backpedal to no avail.
Here’s the excerpt:
Asked whether members of the original Star Wars cast will appear in Episode VII and if he called them before the deal closed to keep them informed, Lucas says, “We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ ” He pauses. “Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.” Then he adds: “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.”
So, it looks like the rumor mill is probably right. The original cast will almost certainly have a role in the new series, passing the baton to the next generation of young Jedi and rebel pilots. It seems Disney is just nailing down the final details before making it official (with a big whoop-de-do, apparently).
Are you glad to hear that Lucas has all but confirmed the original cast is back?
