It may have been 14 years since Lucy Lawless last played everyone’s favorite badass warrior princess, but the actress still hasn’t given up bringing Xena back from the dead (the series and the character).
In a new interview with Den of Geek — where the Battlestar Galactica, Spartacus and Salem actress was on hand to chat about her upcoming role on the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series set to premiere come October on Starz — Lawless revealed she actually pitched the idea of doing a Xena: Warrior Princess (which ran from 1995-2001) two-hour television movie.
"I’ve been pitching that, actually," Lawless said. "The fans really do want that, and I’ve met some people who’ve crowdfunded some things, and I’m just like, 'Why don’t we just do that?'"
Why not, indeed? Well, the main reason why we still haven’t seen Xena back on the small or big screen is because it’s still not clear who owns the rights.
"It’s still about who owns the rights to Xena. But it would still be cool to do it again with Renée [O’Connor], me, Ted [Raimi], and Bruce. It’d be a fun little gig, but what that is I don’t really know."
And what about the little and not-so-fun fact that Xena actually died in the series finale? Lucy Lawless (who’s 47 and looks fantastic, by the way) doesn’t see a problem because after all, the show is pure fantasy and people come back from the dead all the time!
"So what? Technicality!" Lawless laughs. "No one really dies! Screw her head back on, it’s a bit wonky, and she’s got a really bad attitude since she’s been in a box for 20 years, so they’ve got to get Xena’s mojo back, and go and save the world somehow."
Heck yeah! Can you please finally make it so, powers-that-be? The fans have waited long enough. What do you think? Would you guys love to see Lucy Lawless return in the role of Xena in a TV movie? Do you believe there's any chance of that actually happening?
