In the first season of Marvel’s Luke Cage, showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker leveraged his connections as a journalist to line up Method Man, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Raphael Saadiq, and other performers to lend their music to the show. Method Man even got to share a scene opposite Mike Colter’s title character. With the second season slated to hit Netflix in just over a month, Coker has revealed the names of the artists who are coming to Luke Cage’s new episodes.
Via Billboard, Luke Cage Season 2 will feature appearances by Ghostface Killah, Rakim, Joi & D-Nice, Gary Clark Jr., Esperanza Spalding, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Stephen Marley, Jadakiss, and KRS-One. Faith Evans made an appearance in the first season, and she will be back for the second season as well. The story also notes that Rakim will perform an original song for the Season 2 finale.
“Not only do we have [Rakim] on Luke Cage, we have him performing a song about Luke Cage,” said Coker. “It’s manna from heaven.”
During the first season, Coker demonstrated his fandom for Gang Starr by naming each episode after one of their songs. For the second season, Coker is drawing upon the songs of Pete Rock and CL Smooth to provide the episode titles.
“Pete is a huge Luke Cage fan. He’s a comic book collector,” Coker said. “He put out a mixtape that used snippets of the show, so it was a way of saying, ‘You love us, we love you too.’”
Luke Cage season 2 will hit Netflix on Friday, June 22.
