That wasn’t a disturbance in the Force you were sensing, it was a new Star Wars comic book being announced! As revealed today on StarWars.com, the latest addition to Marvel’s ever-growing Star Wars line is Star Wars: Jedi of the Republic—Mace Windu, a new prequel-era series starring Samuel L. Jackson’s fan-favorite character.

The series will be written by Matt Owens, who was a writer for the Luke Cage Netflix show and currently is the scribe of the Elektra comic book, while the art will be provided by the legendary Denys Cowan, who is a veteran of the comic book industry with many notable projects, but who is best known for a landmark run on The Question and co-founding Milestone Media. The first cover for the series is by Captain America: Steve Rogers artist Jesus Saiz, which can be seen below. Here is Marvel’s official description of the series:

“For over a thousand generations, the Jedi have been the peacekeepers of the galaxy…but now, at the dawn of the Clone Wars, they find themselves in a new role: generals in the Army of the Republic. As Mace Windu, one of the Jedi’s greatest warriors, leads a small unit of Jedi into battle shortly after the war begins, the Jedi must make peace with their new role, or be lost to the violence around them!”

Story details are scarce so far, but we do know that it is set shortly after the beginning of the Clone Wars, which puts it in between Episodes II and III of the movie series. While Marvel has mostly stuck to the original trilogy era, this isn’t the first time they’ve gone back to the prequels. They also released Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin early last year, which took place during Obi Wan’s training of his padawan, and are set to release a new Darth Vader series next month which picks up immediately after Episode III.

What awaits Master Windu in this new five-issue series is a mystery, but we’ll find out when the first issue drops in August. So if you’re a battle droid, you have until then to make peace with your maker.
