“We always thought that if magic was real, it would solve all our problems. Well, magic is very real, but in the end, it just makes everything worse.”

When The Magicians returns to Syfy for its hotly anticipated second season later this month, we'll check back in with Quentin (Jason Ralph), Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) and the rest of the Brakebills gang as they delve deeper into the magical realm of Fillory.

The fantasy series based on Lev Grossman's bestselling novels (which are often described as Harry Potter for adults) follows a group of 20-something students enrolled in Brakebills, a secret upstate New York university that specializes in magic. Along with facing a terrifying villain in Season 1 (and ultimately failing to kill the Beast), the gang also discovered that the magical world of Fillory they read about as kids is real, and that it poses a real danger to mankind.

The new season will start seconds after the Season 1 finale and will follow Quentin, Alice, Margo (Summer Bishil) and Eliot (Hale Appleman) as they become Kings and Queens of Fillory or, as Quentin puts it, “Royalty, bitches.” We'll also see how Penny (Arjun Gupta) deals with having had his hands cut off, and we'll also stick with Julia's (Stella Maeve) journey. Moreover, Season 2 will introduce The White Lady (Emma Dumont), who’s described as “Not quite creature, not quite human.”

Along with the new trailer, I’ve thrown in a video featurette where you’ll get to meet said White Lady (just in case you haven't seen it before).

The Magicians’ second season will premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 9/8c on Syfy.
