By the end of the first season, Syfy’s The Magicians had come a long way from the elevator pitch of “Harry Potter with F-bombs and sex,” and Season 2 looks to take it even further.

The series, based on Lev Grossman’s novels of the same name, follows a group of students at the magical university Brakebills. But by the end of the first season, a lot of the action had migrated over to the magical land of Fillory, which opens up a whole lot of options for ways to play with the tropes and expectations of the fantasy genre. In a new featurette, the cast and crew talk about approaching all these fantasy elements with the self-awareness of being young adults who grew up reading these books and watching Harry Potter movies.

It’s a unique position to be able to play with those tropes and subvert them all at the same time. It sounds like the Fillory story will continue to shake things up even further, and it sounds like we’ll get some excellent jokes designed to poke fun at those grown-up Harry Potter comparisons.

Season 2 of The Magicians premieres Jan. 25 on Syfy (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed.)
