Male leads in Ant-Man cast -- now what about the female one?

All the chatter this week has been about the male stars of Ant-Man, but there is apparently a woman in the movie as well.

So we've got Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and actor Michael Pena (American Hustle) up for an unidentified role in the film. But now Variety (via Cinemablend) claims to know which actresses have been discussed for the main female character in the movie.

Those two women are said to be Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3), with another alleged contender, Jessica Chastain, reported to have removed herself from contention. Jones would be new to the superhero genre (although not new to Rudd -- they appeared together in Our Idiot Brother), while Howard had the misfortune to be jammed into the already overcrowded Spider-Man 3 as Gwen Stacy.

The big question is: What role are Jones and Howard vying for? Of course, the first character that comes to mind is Janet Van Dyne, aka the Wasp, Hank Pym's long-suffering wife and a charter member, like her husband, of the Avengers.

But with Michael Douglas already in the picture as an older Pym, reportedly with most of his superhero days behind him, the relatively youthful Jones and Howard would seem more likely to play a different character more directly connected to Rudd's Scott Lang. Could the role be Lang's ex-wife, Peggy Rae? Or perhaps Dr. Erica Sondheim, the scientist he rescues who is capable of saving Lang's daughter's life (which is why he steals Pym's Ant-Man suit in the first place)?

This is all speculation now, with denials starting to fly around already (much as Marvel has denied the Johnny-Depp-as-Dr.-Strange rumors that broke out earlier today), and Variety notes that neither actress has received a formal offer from Marvel yet. But with Ant-Man finally trundling toward production under director Edgar Wright, it won't be long before all these casting rumors are either dashed for good or made official.

What do you think of this possible new casting for the movie? Do you think the Wasp should have her debut on the big screen, or are you okay with a different character?
