If Michael Shannon landing the role of Superman's Kryptonian nemesis, General Zod, sounded a little strange to you, that's nothing compared to the way it first struck the Oscar nominee.

While at the RiverRun film festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he was accepting an "Emerging Master" honor, Shannon sat for a Q&A and spilled the beans about the process of getting cast in Zack Snyder's Superman reboot.

There are lots of things one can gather about Shannon from his slow-burn roles in projects like Revolutionary Road and Boardwalk Empire&8212;but I'd never have pegged him as funny. And yet ...

Shannon seems like an engaging guy, even if I found myself distracted by his puffy boots.
