Looks like the Joker will get some laughs. The upcoming stand-alone Joker film has added to its cast again, which already includes big names like Joaquin Phoenix and Robert DeNiro. Now, comedian Marc Maron is officially joining the origin story film.
Just a few days ago, we heard reports of podcaster and actor Marc Maron's potential involvement in the upcoming Todd Phillips-directed Joker movie. And now, on the most recent episode of his WTF podcast, Maron (who currently stars in Netflix's GLOW) confirmed the rumors, stating he would, in fact, be involved in the film -- despite past blockbuster misgivings.
“Alright, well yes, it is true. It is true people. It is true ladies and gentlemen, I have been added to the cast of the new Joker movie being directed by Todd Phillips, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro — two of the greatest actors that have ever graced the screen."
Maron has been a critic of superhero films before, and addressed the issue in light of his casting: "I’ll be honest with ya. My agent's trying to get me an audition for this film proceeded my rants," said Maron. "I do not think that my opinions have changed at all."
He went on to say that as a fan of comic books (and DeNiro), he's excited for the opportunity, and never thought he would get to do so many of the things his career has afforded to him.
"I never thought that my life would take me to where I am now." continued Maron. "I didn’t assume anything when I started this podcast other than I hope I can stay alive. I don’t know if I can make a living. I don’t know what you do with these podcasts but I gotta stay engaged, stay busy and try to, you know. remain on the right side of the grass."

Maron didn't mention any details about his character, but according to Variety, he will play an agent on DeNiro's talk show who books the Joker. Maron's character also apparently plays a role in the Joker's mad turn leading to his becoming the Clown Prince of Crime.
The Joker film will be a smaller budget, dark origin story for the character taking place outside of the DCEU and separate from Jared Leto's Joker. With Maron, DeNiro, Phoenix, Frances Conroy, and Deadpool's Zazie Beetz, the Joker cast certainly has a slew of diverse acting background to work with.
The Joker movie is set to be released on Oct. 4, 2019.
