Mario is no longer a plumber, apparently a man of leisure now

Mario has been a plumber ever since he was introduced back in the pre-NES days, and pipes have been a key part of his mythos for decades. But, between exploring space and taking on the world with a water pistol, he apparently hung up his tool belt along the way.

In a new profile of Mario published by Nintendo, the developer confirmed Mario was once a plumber, but not so much anymore. Here’s the choice excerpt, as translated by Kotaku: "All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, [Mario] does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago…" Yep, a long time ago.

Now? He’s too busy sporting magical hats, racing cars, and playing a whole lot of cool sports to bother himself with actually fixing any leaky pipes or unclogging toilets. It’s an interesting transition to see Nintendo acknowledge it, but yeah, Mario hasn’t really been a plumber for a long time. Now he’s a man of leisure, kicking back and having a good time.

We’re guessing he left Luigi behind to the dirty work.
