While Hamill won’t be walking out with a laser sword or picking up rocks with his mind as a Christian holy warrior, he will be hefting some period-appropriate weaponry and rockin’ a set of prescribed mystical values when he makes his debut as a key cast member for the series’ upcoming second season.
History Channel announced Hamill signed on for the medieval drama to play the role of Talus, a “battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran of the Crusades, who survived captivity for ten years in the Holy Land and is tasked with training the new initiates to the Order,” according to a release from History Channel and A&E Studios.
The period drama follows the political and martial life of the close-knit members of the Knights Templar as they juggle internal conflict with waging ideological battles, all while defending the relics of the Christian faith. Set in the early 1300s and beyond, Knightfall targets the Templars at the peak of their influence and the start of their decline, even as they escalate their search across France for — what else? — the Holy Grail.
“The story of the Knights Templar has never been fully told until now,” the network explains, “and Knightfall goes deep into the clandestine world of this legendary brotherhood of warrior monks to learn who these knights were, how they lived, and what they died believing.”
Hamill joins a cast that also will feature Season 2 newcomers Tom Forbes (Wolf Hall) as the volatile Prince Louis, and Genevieve Gaunt (The Royals) as Isabella, the ambitious daughter of France’s King Philip. We’re still waiting for History Channel to reveal a release date for Season 2, and now that Hamill’s joined the cast, we’ll be watching more closely than ever for fresh Knightfall news.
