Mark Millar on Chrononauts film: 'We're working on it right now'

Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) put together one of the most enjoyable sci-fi comics of the year in Chrononauts, and now he’s offered up an update on the film adaptation.

The comic, a time-traveling mashup adventure that evokes everything from Back to the Future to Fast and the Furious, focuses on two friends who are piloting the first-ever time-travel experiment. Lead characters Corbin Quinn and Danny Reilly are likable leading men, with Hollywood good looks that should be relatively easy to fill on the big screen once casting begins.

So how goes the film development process? Millar says they’re barreling ahead to develop the script right now, and they hope to hire a director soon:

“Actually, we’re working on it right now. Universal Pictures has bought the rights and we’re making it with Chris Morgan as producer, the brains behind the Fast and the Furious juggernaut over at that company. We’re all really excited about this and getting the screenplay together for a director at the moment.”

Reading the comic, it feels like Millar wrote the 'book with an eventual film adaptation in mind. The action is absolutely massive, blending the past and future together into some truly epic set pieces and battles. Dinosaurs vs. fighter jets? Check, check and check. It also has a decent story at the center, touching on the potential consequences of time travel and how easy it would be to cause absolute anarchy on the space-time continuum with a few selfish trips.

If you haven’t read the comic, a collected edition of the four-issue run is set to hit shelves soon. It’s well worth a read and can make a great primer before this one blows up on the box office in a few years.
