There’s no question that Marvel has been crushing DC in movie theaters for what feels like an eternity now, despite there being strong fan love for both universes. And Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar, who has done great work for both publishers, has a few thoughts as to why DC has been struggling to keep up lately.

We’re just going to warn all you die-hard DC fans now, Millar’s comments are quite controversial. “I think it’s really simple,” he tells Yahoo Movies UK in a new interview. “The characters aren’t cinematic and I say this as a massive DC fan who much prefers their characters to Marvel’s.”

Millar goes on to explain that unlike Marvel, many DC characters focus too heavily on their superpowers rather than their secret identities. An idea that will no doubt be debatable among fans. Millar says: “Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are some of my favourites but I think these characters, with the exception of Batman, they aren’t based around their secret identity, they are based around their super power.”

The man behind Millarworld adds that Marvel characters are prone to being based on their personality, citing Matt Murdock and Peter Parker as examples. But wait a second, where does Clark Kent and his whole backstory in Smallville fit into all this?! Millar says that “outside of Batman, [DC] is not about the character.” Ouch!

Millar confesses he might get slammed for his comments, although we’d say they definitely warrant a healthy discussion, and this is coming from a man who has written for both comic book universes. He adds that even with the best directors, writers, actors, and even budgets, many of the films have fallen short of expectations – and he’s certainly got a point there.
