Mark Wahlberg is developing a new sci-fi comic series in hopes it'll eventually lead to a tentpole film franchise.

Wahlberg and producer Stephen Levinson have announced the new comic series Alien Bounty Hunter at Vault Comics, which will be written by Adrian F. Wassel (The Gifted) and David M. Booher (Powerless). The art comes from Nick Robles (Maze Runner, Clockwork Angels). The comic its slated to be a monthly series with the first issue making its debut at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

The comic will follow Ben Madsen, a bounty hunter who's tracking down a fugitive who turns out to be not-so-human. From there, Madsen finds himself sliding deeper into an epic alien conspiracy, and we imagine there'll be a whole lot of action and twists in-between. It's not the worst idea for a comic, and if the execution is there, it could make for a fun run.

Wahlberg & Co. are making no bones about the fact that this is all just wheel-spinning until they can turn Alien Bounty Hunter into a film franchise ... which could be both a good thing and a bad thing. If you're looking for something that embraces the comic medium and pushes its boundaries, this probably isn't it. But it should be quite the cinematic story (heehee), so there's that.
