Star Wars is back at Marvel Comics, and before the House of Ideas gives us all new adventures in a galaxy far, far away, they're letting us relive the old ones.

Earlier this year comics fans got the bittersweet but probably inevitable news that, after more than 20 years at Dark Horse Comics, the license for Star Wars comic books would return to Marvel Comics, the publisher owned by Lucasfilm's new parent company, Disney. Dark Horse did a great job with Star Wars and produced some amazing stories, so we're sad to see them go, but the prospect of the franchise returning to a place with the resources and talent of Marvel is certainly an exciting one. We're all looking forward to what Marvel does with new Star Wars comics, but fans who remember the company's original run of more than 100 Star Wars issues from 1977 to 1986 have also been wondering if new reprints of the classic Star Wars books would be coming. Now we have an answer.

Marvel announced today that in January they'll release the first volume of Star Wars: The Original Marvel Years, a new omnibus collection gathering Marvel's run with Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie and the gang. Volume one will collect Star Wars #1-#44, plus Star Wars Annual #1, featuring work from comics legends like Roy Thomas, Howard Chaykin, Archie Goodwin, Walter Simonson, Chris Claremont, Carmine Infantino and more, plus new covers by Chaykin and Greg Hildebrandt. These issues have been available through Dark Horse Books Omnibus collections for a while, but this time they'll be packaged in a hefty, oversized Marvel hardcover.

"With Star Wars poised to return to its comic book home, what better time to revisit the first adventures of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2 and, of course, Darth Vader?" Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso said. "I am extremely proud to present these original Star Wars stories, told as only Marvel can, in the first in a massive and glorious Omnibus series."

So if you've been looking for an excuse to update your comics collection with new Star Wars books, and you want to look back at the original adventures Marvel published in the midst of the original trilogy's release, watch out for this omnibus in January.
