It’s not often a comic character actually stays dead these days, but Marvel has actually managed to keep the original version of Jean Grey in the grave. Until now.
Information about Marvel Comics’ plans for later this year are starting to leak out, and Bleeding Cool reports the publisher is mapping out a new series titled Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey, which is designed to bring the original Jean (the adult version, who died after being taken over by the godlike power of The Phoenix) back into the fold. The series will be written by Matthew Rosenberg, with art by Leinil Francis Yu.
Here’s the solicit description, which lays out Jean’s imminent return:
Years ago, Jean Grey died and the X-Men mourned her. Since then, the world has changed, her teammates have lived without her and died without her. And now, when strange events start happening all over the world, those teammates can only come to one conclusion – the one true Jean Grey is back!
This is, put simply, a big deal. Of course, a time-displaced, younger version of Jean has been kicking around the main continuity the past few years, but not the OG Jean. The younger Jean has been anchoring her own (excellent) solo series, which focuses on the potential return of the Phoenix, and it sounds like that story will eventually come to a head in Phoenix Resurrection.
A lot has changed since Jean died all those years ago (most notably the X-Men are no longer the center of the Marvel universe like they were back in the day), so it’ll be interesting to see where she fits into the new mutant status quo. Also, what does this mean for young Jean?
Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey hits shelves December 27.
What do you think of the decision to bring the OG Jean back to life? How will it work?
