As part of the fresh new start initiative, many classic heroes are going back to their roots — and the God of Thunder is one of them. Writer Jason Aaron and artist Mike Del Mundo will be bringing Thor #1 — a mission to reclaim the scattered artifacts of Asgard — to Marvel’s forefront.
Aaron has plenty of Thor bonafides with titles like Thor: God of Thunder, Thor, Thors, and The Mighty Thor under his belt while Del Mundo worked with the writer on Weirdworld and done projects like Avengers and Elektra.
The story they’re crafting together is one in which Thor himself will also be crafting. “The production cost of hundreds of new hammers” is one of the many challenges the god will have to face, especially when the Juggernaut shows up. “Even though Thor Odinson is now reclaiming his mantle,” Aaron said, “This new volume will also be going in a very different direction. Thor has a completely new status-quo.” He likens this storytelling shift to that of Jane Foster, who recently saw quite a heroic twist to her character.
“Actually the entire landscape of his corner of the Marvel Universe has been changed in the wake of the ‘Death of the Mighty Thor’ arc in Mighty Thor,” Aaron continued. “But there’s still a War of the Realms raging, and Thor isn’t looking to stand on the sidelines.”
With hundreds of new hammers in tow, there’s no way the justice-seeking hero would wait to leap into battle and back into readers’ hearts, pushing another step forward for Marvel’s relaunch.
Thor #1 launches on June 13.
