Black Panther and Deadpool, the King of Wakanda and the Merc with the Mouth. They don't have much in common, other than they're both Marvel superheroes and they both had huge movies box office hits in 2018. Now they'll have one more thing in common: They'll be trying to kill each other in the pages of Marvel Comics.
Marvel announced Friday that after fighting everyone from Thanos to The Punisher in various limited series over the years, Deadpool's next foe will indeed be T'Challa in Black Panther vs. Deadpool. The five-issue series, which will be written by Daniel Kibblesmith (Lockjaw) and drawn by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz (Civil War II: Kingpin), explores what happens when Deadpool goes hunting for a piece of vibranium and has to go through the ruler of Wakanda to get it.
“Featuring a brawl you can only get in comics (for now anyway), Black Panther vs. Deadpool is the best of both worlds, equal parts Black Panther/Wakanda and Deadpool/Crazytown,” editor Wil Moss said in a press release. “In bouncing these two characters off each other (and sometimes through each other), Daniel and Ricardo have found some really fascinating insights into what makes them tick as individuals.”
At first glance you might not think these two characters -- one known for his sense of humor and constant talking and the other...well, not -- might not fit together, but Deadpool's fourth wall-breaking persona has made him the perfect foil for a massive number of Marvel characters over the years, which is why these limited series keep happening. Now, he gets to try his hand at besting T'Challa, and from the looks of the cover for the first issue he'll have to do it on the Panther's home turf.
Black Panther vs. Deadpool #1, the first in a five-issue run, arrives October 3.
