Get ready for even more Guardians of the Galaxy, this time on the small screen.
The James Gunn-directed big-screen debut of Marvel's cosmic misfits hasn't even hit theaters yet, and we're already set to see much more of these characters over the next few years. Gunn's already been confirmed as the writer and director for a sequel to the flick, and now we've got word from Marvel that the rumored Guardians of the Galaxy animated series will become a reality.
Marvel teased the new series with a one-minute trailer featuring Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon during a Marvel Animation panel at Comic-Con Saturday morning. There's no word yet on when the series will begin airing, but it will likely join the company's superhero cartoon lineup on Disney XD, which already features Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.
The Guardians have appeared previously in animated form on the Ultimate Spider-Man series and the now-defunct Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes series, and Marvel Animation Vice President of Development and Production Cort Lane noted that a season-three Ultimate Spider-Man episode featuring the return of the Guardians actually aired early to boost interest in the characters ahead of their big-screen debut.
"With the upcoming movie, we're trying to get them into the minds of everybody who might not know about the Guardians." Lane said.
So after kids everywhere see the Guardians movie and start clamoring for more Rocket and Groot (and believe me, they will), they'll get their wish. We'll keep you posted on when the series will actually make its small-screen debut.
