Things were pretty messy before Marvel got its act together with the new, shared-universe approach. But it sounds like some of those early experiments might finally get a second chance.
In a chat with Bleeding Cool, Marvel exec Kevin Feige revealed that both Daredevil and Punisher are on the short list to join a future phase of the big-screen master plan. Of course, Ben Affleck starred in the 2003 dud Daredevil film, while the halfway-decent 2004 Punisher flick with Thomas Jane failed to inspire much confidence.
Film rights on both properties have since reverted back to Marvel, and Feige said they’re hard at work figuring out how to bring these two iconic characters back into the fold:
“We’re trying to figure out what to do with Daredevil now. Punisher could show up at one point. You know, once we get characters back into the Marvel fold we don’t want to do something right away, we want to do the smart thing at the smart time.”
It makes sense that both characters are under consideration (as they should be, since they’re both solid properties), but it’s nice to see Marvel doesn’t want to rush either of them out too quickly. Considering how far ahead the company maps things out, it could be years until one of these actually happens — but we at least know the introduction will be planned out, as opposed to shoehorned in.
Which of these two comics do you want to see back on the big screen first?
